I completely understand your concern, but you can try a few variations until you find the one that is right for you.
For example, if an all yellow dress is too overwhelming on you, try color blocking where yellow is a dominant color but not the only hue (ie the Jessica Simpson gray and yellow dress in the roundup).
You can also try a pattern or a texture or both. Let yellow be your background color, but the pattern or texture will be the focus instead of your skin (ie Taylor Swift's white and yellow abstract dress or Solange's dress).
And finally you can pick darker hues with gold undertones which will be complement skin types that are pale.
